Counterweight - a brief description

Counterweight is one of the few weight loss programs that have been successfully rolled out across a health system after research. The Counterweight Programme has over 12 years experience within the NHS healthcare system and has been commissioned by over 30 primary care trusts and directly by the Scottish Government to implement Counterweight in 13 out of their 14 Health Boards as the weight management programme of choice. 

Counterweight includes three novel weight-management programs have been developed on the basis of research involving collaboration between seven UK Universities:

1 The Counterweight Programme:

  • Aimed at a moderate weight loss of 5-10% and has demonstrated evidence of both clinical and cost effectiveness.
  • It is a structured weight management intervention delivered over a 12-month period, using behavioural strategies to assist people change their lifestyle

2. Counterweight Plus:

  • Aimed at 15% weight loss or more for individuals with a higher BMI.
  • Involves a total diet replacement phase over 12 weeks, followed by stepped, structured food re-introduction and then a weight maintenance phase over 18-months.

3. Counterweight Families:

  • An intervention for adults and children delivered over 12-months
