Professor Mark Harris the Director of COMPaRE-PHC. He is foundation Professor of General Practice and Executive Director of the Centre for Primary Health Care and Equity at UNSW. He has a five year NHMRC Senior Professorial Research Fellowship 2011-2015 and was appointed Scientia Professor 2013-16.

His clinical practice is as a volunteer GP with the Asylum Seekers Centre from 2000 to the present. He is a life fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practice in recognition for his work for general practice on diabetes and preventive medicine including editing the RACGP “redbook”. He is a director of the board of the Inner West Sydney Medicare Local.

He has substantial experience in health services research and trials on chronic illness prevention and management in primary health care. He has completed trials of interventions to facilitate multidisciplinary team work in the management of chronic disease, structured behavioural risk factor interventions in general practice and community health services and cardiovascular absolute risk assessment in general practice. He currently leads a four year NHMRC Partnership project on the Implementation of Guidelines for the Prevention of Chronic Disease in General Practice 2010-2013.

He is interested in the prevention and management of obesity in primary health care especially among disadvantaged populations with low health literacy and the implementation of evidence based obesity management and prevention in primary health care including the role of primary care organisations.  He is currently supervising post-doctoral fellow Dr Nighat Faruqi and PhD student Nouhad El Hadad
